June is gay - official!

Feeling a bit fruity this month? Not knowing why you're feeling a little light on your feet and doing more flower arranging than ever? Well, June is gay and that's official. No, I don't mean June Brown aka Dot from 'enders has come out the closest, but the big man over here in yankeeland has declared June is LGBT month!
"Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Out of this resistance, the LGBT rights movement in America was born. During LGBT Pride Month, we commemorate the events of June 1969 and commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans" The President said on 1st June. "I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2009 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to turn back discrimination and prejudice everywhere it exists"
In the press release he lists some of the things he's done for the LGBT community, such as joining the United Nations to decriminalize homosexuality around the world, supporting equal rights for LGBT Americans, enhancing hate crimes laws and supporting civil unions! (Although, when he was Illinois State gov, he voted AGAINST gay marriage) He also wants to end the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and help gay couples adopt children! To see the full message from Mr President see The White House website.
While I've been writing this, the national news here in America have just covered Barack Obama's informative and perhaps goundbreaking speach in Cairo, that's designed to boost the image of a tarnished America to the muslim and greater world. It's an interesting speach and he certainly seems to be reaching out with the arm of peace, whether it works or not remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, the world is a safer place than it was before he took over the big job and had his finger on the button!

5 People had their say.:

While I'm out photostrolling tomorrow I must pick up some pics and create a special tribute post for LGBT month.
Wish you two were here in NYC for a drink and a chat :)

He has one major step left to take - and that is to overturn the decision of the Californian state on Prop 8, and I will respect him. Until that moment, it is still lip servicxe... Jx

Well Jon has beaten me to it - I think its great to declare June as LGBT month but actions speak louder than words and allowing Prop8 to discriminate against same sex relationships is a step back - he really needs to give all citizens EQUAL rights in ALL US states - I've been argueing with people on Twitter about this (actually stopped now, as I think they were just after a reaction).
